“Service Learning in Health and Wellness” is a course offered by CCAPP at The City College of NY, which guides students to learn through hands-on services that address health issues in Harlem.
We've worked on making healthy snacks available in school vending machines, improved school cafeteria’s recycling, convinced local bodegas to offer healthy lunches, hosted farmers’ market, and developed a Healthy Living Guide with cancer prevention tips.

Promoting Healthy Eating by Banning Toys from Happy Meals
Obesity is one of the leading causes of cancer development. Many parents, after a hard day of work, are tired and unwilling to prepare meals for an hour. Instead, they choose easy, unhealthy options such as fast foods. Recently, Queens Councilman has expressed that he would like to ban McDonald's from putting toys into Happy Meals. This way, the food will seem less appealing and desirable to kids and will help fight obesity. Comrie mentions that once the food meets certain health guidelines, McDonald's can start placing the toys back into the meals. However, McDonald's claims that kids only eat at the restaurant three times a month, an amount that is not causing obesity. What are your opinions of this law?

I know when I was younger it would be the toys that would draw me to the franchise. I did see that McDonalds is making an effort to give parents healthier options for their children. I beileve it is also up to the parents to say, look you can have one unhealthy thing on the menu (fries, soda, etc) the rest of the meal must be of healthy standards.
ReplyDeleteI don't think all the blame should go to McDonalds, and that we are essentially responsible for what goes into our mouths and our childrens mouths.
I agree. We do have the option.
ReplyDeleteMost children copy their parents action. Its like the phrase that I have heard since I was young, "Monkey see, monkey do."
I use to work in McDonalds, near the Bronx Zoo, in the summer all I saw were children, as a cashier and most of children got Happy Meals for the toys. If they didn't get the toy they wanted they would either:
1. ask for a new one
2. complain to their parents that not the toy they wanted
The food was the last thought in there minds.
What are you thoughts on the chemicals used to stimulate the senses that most fast food franchise use? They place hormones in our food which cause us to crave more of it. To some degree they are supplying a product which adds to the obesity crisis and there should be laws which regulate the uses of such chemicals [especially since we are feeding the foods to children]
